Medieval Metal

Metal

Juliette’s interest in rock, metal and experimenting with electric violin amplification & effects, started in her teens: as a founding member of several NZ bands melding heavier elements with Celtic rock.

Her long-term collaboration with former Dio guitarist Rowan Robertson, began in 2007 in Los Angeles with a recording project for metal band, DC4. Juliette composed and recorded each instrument of the string section for This is What You Wanted on the album, Explode.

Following the success of this, Juliette was engaged by DC4, to record with Guns n’ Roses keyboardist Dizzy Reed, on their subsequent album Electric Ministry, in The Ballad of Rock n’ Roll.

In Los Angeles, Juliette made guest appearances with: DC4 on LA’s legendary Sunset Strip; with Dean Pleasants (Suicidal Tendencies); and Irish Punk band, Vagrant Nation. Her live recording commemorating Jimi Hendrix for KPFK Radio, earned her a second invitation to broadcast, by popular listener demand.

Medieval Music

“I had my first experience playing the Vielle, during a Summer Course studying at Schola Cantorum in Basil, Switzerland. I loved it from the first moment!

I’m pursuing my passion for medieval music & vielle playing, learning from every specialist I can hunt-down in the US and UK.  I was delighted to accompany Cantoris LA in 2015, performing Hildegard Von Bingen’s Ordo Virtutum at St John’s Cathedral in Los Angeles.

On the awesome quest to discover how Medieval music really sounded, there’s a challenge: how to approach this music without unconsciously bringing our own musical background (be it classical training or folk-music) with us. In the same way, it’s hard to hear our own accents when we speak…

… I decided to stop worrying for a while. She Wolf is my project exploring medieval dance music with heavy metal expression.

Recorded during a sweltering LA Summer, with the legendary Rowan Robertson (Dio) on guitar and engineered by Bill Metoyer (Slayer).

I hope that both early-music and metal purists, will pardon my shouting in a very loud 21st century accent.”
